National Elevator Escalator Safety Awareness Week kicked off Monday at P.S. 9 in the Bronx.
Students learned tips on how to stay safe in case of an emergency and to relax and wait when summoning an elevator.
"We learned that when you go through the escalators you have to make sure that your shoelaces are tied, and make sure that you hold somebody's hand before you go and hold the handles," said student Heather Reyes.
The Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation will team up with the Department of Buildings to visit 10 other schools in the next two weeks.
Each student who completes the program gets a junior inspector badge.
