Two college students have joined together to create a program for parents and children affected by eating disorders to help cope with it. NY1's Roma Torre filed the following report.

Liana Rosenman and Kristina Saffran became friends under unlikely circumstances. They met during a stay at an eating disorder treatment center.

"We were really good support systems for both of us and we kind of grew in our recovery together," says Rosenman. "Then Project Heal came about."

Project Heal is an organization they started three-and-a-half years ago to give back to girls who don't have the money for what can be a very expensive treatment.

"When we were in treatment, we saw a lot of people get kicked out because they couldn't afford it or because their insurance cut them off," says Rosenman. "We saw people who couldn't even get into treatment because their insurance wouldn't cover it, and these were people probably who were motivated more than Kristina and I."

Through fundraisers, sale of merchandise and donations, the two college students say they have been able to send six girls to treatment for free.

"The average length of stay is about a month, and that's $30,000 and often not covered by insurance," says Saffran. "That's a huge amount of money. It's terrible because eating disorders are such awful illnesses and so serious and can be fatal often but they are also very treatable."

This summer they started a support group with their parents for other parents.

"We have been struggling with this illness for four-and-a-half years," says Elizabeth Lieberman, who attended one of the Project Heal support groups because her daughter suffers from anorexia. "It's very hard to find support groups just for parent specifically,"

"You have all these things for the kids and all these resources and support but nothing for the parents," says Saffran. "I remember my mom and Liana's parents were like, where do we go?

For giving parents and their children a place to heal, Liana Rosenman and Kristina Saffran are NY1's New Yorkers of the week.
