During the recent freezing temperatures, tenants at one NYCHA building in East Harlem with little heat turned to NY1 For You for help and finally saw their landlord warm up to their needs. NY1's Susan Jhun filed this NY1 For You follow-up report. Tenants at 1940 Lexington Avenue were left out in the cold until they called NY1 For You, and after their story aired, they got the heat should have had to begin with.
When NY1 met with tenants earlier this week, they told us how their landlord — the New York City Housing Authority — kept their apartments frigid.
"I'm freezing. I'm cold all the time," said tenant Mabel Sands.
"Some days it feel like you outside," said home care attendant Veda Rankin.
"I have the stove on in order to keep it hot in here," said tenant Frking Young.
Residents also complained that the only other way to warm their apartments was to run space heaters which made their electricity bills skyrocket.
"My bill is $134 this month," said Green.
After initially claiming there was no problem, a NYCHA spokeswoman told NY1 that staff found a problem with the heat control panel system that regulates the boilers.
The spokeswoman told NY1 the problem was fixed and as a result all apartments were receiving proper heat.
A NY1 crew went back out to confirm heat was indeed restored. Residents are grateful but skeptical.
"We're grateful for it," says tenant Harriet Green. "With you getting on the situation, otherwise it would have been this way again another winter. We've been through this every winter."
