1956...Elvis Presley makes the first of his three appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show in New York.


1971...Inmates seize control of the Attica State Prison outside Buffalo. The seige ends four days later when police and guards storm the prison. 43 people are killed in the clash.


1991...Heavyweight Mike Tyson is indicted on a charge of raping a Miss Black America contestant in Indianapolis. He is later convicted.


1993...School's still out for the summer. City schools don't open as scheduled due to an asbestos scare. Classes finally resume on September 20th.
