1735...A jury acquits John Peter Zenger, the publisher of The New York Weekly Journal, of a charge of seditious libel following the publication of a story critical of New York's governor. The case is a landmark in the struggle for freedom of the press.

1964...In one of the most notorious crimes of the civil rights era, the bodies of New York civil rights workers Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner, and James Chaney of Mississippi, are found buried in a dam in Mississippi. Seven men, several of them members of the Ku Klux Klan, are convicted in connection with the murders.

1982...The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum opens on the Hudson waterfront in Manhattan.

1988...New York Congressman Mario Biaggi is convicted of conspiracy, extortion and tax evasion in the Wedtech political scandal, when records show he was one of a number of government officials to accept bribes in exchange for giving no-bid contracts to the New York-based firm.
