Sony is pulling the plug on the controversial comedy "The Interview."

The movie was scheduled to be released on Christmas Day.

Sony's decision comes shortly after theaters including AMC and Regal announced they would not the show the movie amid concerns of violence.

Earlier, the movie's New York premiere was canceled due to terror threats made by hackers.

The comedy starring Seth Rogen and James Franco depicts an attempt to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

It was set to debut Thursday night at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema in Manhattan, with a full release planned for Christmas Day.

The premiere was canceled after the hacking group Guardians of Peace sent a message urging moviegoers to stay away from "The Interview."

In an email first published by the Los Angeles Times, the group said, in part, "The world will be full of fear. Remember the 11th of September."

Guardians of Peace is the same group behind the recent cyberattack on Sony Pictures, which is releasing "The Interview."

North Korea has condemned the movie, but denies any connection to the hacking at Sony.

The Department of Homeland Security says there is no credible threat to movie theaters. But the NYPD says it is prepared.

"I think our primary posture is going to be to have a police presence and response capability to reassure people who may have heard about this and have concerns," said NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism John Miller.

Rogen and Franco also pulled out of all media appearances related to the movie, including a planned guest spot tomorrow on "Late Night With Seth Meyers."
