Many think they're too old to get involved in the ever-changing world of technology in which we live. That's not the case though, proven by some adults who are learning to code while well into other careers. NY1's Adam Balkin filed the following report.
They’re popping up everywhere and serve as a sign that you can teach an old dog new tricks: computer coding schools designed to teach everyone from nine to ninety-nine years old. Some are non-profit; others are traditional businesses, like one in the Big Apple.
At The New York Code & Design Academy, we recently caught a graduation ceremony for adults showing off websites they’ve created after a 12-week intensive programming course.
“To be competitive in any position now you really have to speak the language of technology so we’re trying to offer people a fast, efficient way to do that," says Jeremy Snepar of The NY Code & Design Academy.
Several students, many of whom are looking for a career change, say like so many of us, their desire started as an idea for an app or website that they never created because they just figured learning to code well enough so late in their lives just wasn’t realistic.
“I definitely can build what I have in my mind and I’m going to continue to learn and I’m going to continue to build things better,” says student Mallory Bory.
So you may be thinking an intensive course is great to get started in coding but really, when it comes to employers—is someone going to hire me over another person who went to college for this? Well, spoke to some recruiters here who said absolutely.
“A lot of people that come to a school like this have a different background. Usually, they come from some other type of career and what that has given them is a totally different take on what to do here and problem-solving, so having that other career is a total benefit," says Charlie Truelson of Conde Nast.
Again, there are many places out there to find computer coding classes. Do a simple search online and it’s easy to find one near your home. Many, in fact, you can take entirely via the computer from your home.
