A relative youngster on the pizza scene has been voted best in the city. Zagat editor Molly Moker filed the following report for NY1.
Paulie Gee's, was just voted the best pizza place in New York City.
Paulie Gee's is just four years old, a baby in this storied pizza town. But no matter; this year, it's climbed to the top of Zagat's best pizza list for the first time.
“I'm just overwhelmed. When I set out on this journey, I would go up to my idols in the pizza world and say, 'It's just my dream to one day be mentioned in the same breath with you,'" says owner Paulie Giannone.
That's Paulie; computer geek turned self-taught pizzaiolo. His restaurant is his passion project.
“Thirty-something years ago, I chose a career, and I chose to masquerade as a computer geek. At the time, I didn't know I was going to be masquerading, and it really wasn't working out for me in the long run. In the grand scheme of things, I wasn't getting to the spot in life where I wanted to be. I took this journey, because I had to do something for myself in life," Giannone says.
And, oh man, can you taste that passion in his delicious creations, which include sweet and savory combinations and a full vegan menu to appease the neighborhood hipsters.
"I love to come up with topping combinations. The Hellboy has hot sopressata and parmesan, really savory, and we put on spicy Mike's Hot Honey. I like to mix sweet and savory; those seem to be the ones that really come out best for me," Giannone says.
The vegan pizza blows my mind because it does not look vegan at all. It's made with housemade fennel vegan sausage and a cashew ricotta, which is also made in house. If you're a vegan, this is definitely what you need to be eating.
