City beaches and park sprinklers will again be popular spots Thursday as temperatures are expected to flirt with triple digits.

Cooling centers were open for a second straight day around the five boroughs.

Residents are urged to take it slow, drink plenty of water and if possible, check in on neighbors and the elderly to make sure they are coping with the extreme heat.

If staying indoors, Con Edison reminds customers to conserve energy and use air conditioners wisely.

The utility reduced voltage in dozens of neighborhoods in Queens and Brooklyn Wednesday as a precaution to protect equipment and maintain service. Still, there have been scattered outages including in East New York.

To find the nearest cooling center, call 311 or visit

To report a power outage call 1-800-75-CON ED, or visit

Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is doing what it can to keep subways moving.

Extra crews are on hand to handle any heat-related issues.

Officials say in this heat, rails can expand which can jam switches.

Power may also be reduced to avoid outages.

Customers are urged to check the MTA's website for more information.

Mass transit updates are also available on NY1's 24 hour Rail and Road Channel on Time Warner Cable Channel 104.

Swimming is only permitted at city beaches when lifeguards are on duty.

The city's pools do not open until next week.

Residents can also open a fire hydrant, but only if equipped with a city-approved spray cap.

They can be picked up by anyone 18 years or older at any local firehouse.
