Two men were recovering at Lincoln Hospital Thursday after being shot by a gunman just blocks away from Yankee Stadium.

Police allege that the gunman opened fire into a crowd on a sidewalk near 161st Street and Gerard Avenue at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, just one block from the Bronx Superior Court.

Authorities say the two victims, who are aged 40 and 60, were transported to Lincoln Hospital and are expected to survive.

A motive is unclear but witnesses say the suspect fired four shots after getting into a dispute with vendors on the block. Some say it may have involved a bookseller and another vendor selling water.

"Well, first I heard the shot. First I looked to see where he pointed the gun and he was just pointing straight at this guy. He must have shot him three times. The guy got up, he shot him again," said a witness. "If he shot somebody else, I didn't see that. Then he started walking up that way."

The standoff was over as soon as it started, as surveillance video shows the gunman raised his arms and did not resist as four court officers from the nearby Bronx Supreme Courthouse took him into custody.

"There were like 40 policemen around here. So I don't know if it was fate, but he picked the wrong time to do it," said a witness.

"I was scared as hell. And then he was shooting when kids were around and I was nervous for the kids, and I was really scared," said another witness. "I didn't whether a bullet was going to hit me or pass me. Fortunately, I pushed my worker inside and I locked my door."

"Very, very loud, oh my god. Traumatizing, very, very scary," said a third.

By Thursday night, police had not identified the gunman or the victims. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
