A 10-year-old boy was injured Monday evening by a stray bullet fired in the Melrose section of the Bronx, just blocks from Yankee Stadium, and police said he is expected to recover.

The boy was shot in the leg shortly before 6:30 p.m. as he was playing on Gerard Avenue and East 157th Street, less than an hour before the New York Yankees took on the Toronto Blue Jays in Yankee Stadium just blocks away.

Police said the boy was recovering in Lincoln Hospital.

"One shot went off, we weren't sure whether it was a firecracker or a gunshot. And then about two or three more shots went off, we all ran. It was scary, everybody was running," said a witness.

This shooting took place four days after a dispute between two vendors lead to a shooting on Gerard Avenue and 161st Street.

The gunman in Thursday's shooting is in custody but the shooter who attacked on Monday was still at large by late Monday.

Anyone with information on Monday shooting should contact the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS, or text CRIMES and then enter TIP577, or visit ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
