State University of New York Chancellor Nancy Zimpher released a wide-ranging plan Tuesday that she says will spur economic growth, cultivate new teachers and smooth connections between schools.

The plan took 10 months to draw up. It's designed to turn the 64 campus system into an economic engine for New York.

Proposals include forming a two-way pipeline between academia and the business world by both inviting business leaders to work with teachers and students; and funneling ideas from schools back into the free market.

"Together we can imagine a New York that's known around the world for it's wealth of talent and diversity, a New York with green communities powered by clean energy a New York where every child reaches the education finish line and has access to a high quality, college education," Zimpher said.

There are also programs for students interested in education careers; an agreement that makes it easier for community college students to transfer credits to SUNY schools; plans to open a center for health care jobs and proposals to improve online courses.
