In the East Village, elected officials and students are leading a campaign to cut down on the use of styrofoam kicks off at neighborhood public schools.
The effort seeks to eliminate styrofoam cups and trays in school cafeterias and other government-run buildings.
"This is something that's just downright crazy. Styrofoam is not only not biodegradable and dangerous to the environment, it's made of petroleum products," said Public Advocate Bill de Blasio in a Thursday press conference. "We're trying to break our dependence on foreign oil and yet make it worse every time we use a styrofoam product."
State and city officials are recruiting other leaders to support the cause and pass new laws banning the products.
