Student Collapses, Dies During Bronx Basketball Game

By: NY1 News

A 19-year-old student in Christopher Columbus High School in the Bronx died Friday after collapsing while playing basketball in gym class.

Department of Education officials said CPR and a defibrillator were used to try to save the young man.

He was taken to Jacobi hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"We of the education community as well as the city are very saddened by this. We hate to lose any child, much less lose a child on school grounds," said Deputy Mayor of Education Derek Walcott. "So our condolences go out to the family and we wish them the best, and any support that we can provide them we will be providing."

Christopher Columbus High School will offer grief counseling to students and staff members on Monday.
