School crime and violence has decreased dramatically since Mayor Michael Bloomberg first took office, statistics released today show.

The Department of Education credits the drop to a strong partnership with the mayor.

In 2002, the mayor cracked down on escalating school violence by sending police and school safety agents to schools. The worst-behaved students also were disciplined more severely.

Since then, crime in schools dropped 22 percent, violent crime dropped 19 percent, robberies fell 44 percent, and assaults plunged 31 percent.
