A smart phone application that helps you find the nearest subway and commuter rail stations takes first prize at a citywide competition.

WayfinderNYC was named the winner yesterday at an event in Chelsea.

The app uses GPS to give walking directions to subway and PATH stations, superimposed on a phone's camera display.

The program was judged as having made the best use of city information including traffic updates, taxi info and restaurant inspections in the NYC Big Apps competition.

"We're looking for good ideas for how you take all of the city's data, which belongs to you and me, and uses it and really lets people do thing they would not otherwise be able to do in the city or help each other in ways they could not otherwise do,” explained Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

The developers of Wayfinder will collect $7,500 for their win.

The second prize went to an application that lets users post live comments on city taxis and their drivers.
