State Cuts May Close About A Third Of City's Senior Centers

With the state slashing needed funds, 105 senior centers, or nearly a third of all the centers in the city, are now on the chopping block.
Of the 105 locations slated to close, 31 are in Brooklyn, 26 are in Manhattan, 22 are in Queens, 22 are in the Bronx and four are in Staten Island.
Governor Andrew Cuomo's budget proposal calls for $27 million in cuts to city senior services.
The state budget is due on April 1.
"And the city is left holding the bag and who is going to suffer? The older people of this city, frail older people of this city," said Nancy Wackstein of United Neighborhood Houses of New York.
Those who spend their days at the Queens Community House in Forest Hills say they are outraged, and are starting a petition to stop the closures.
"I am worthless to the government. I am no longer producing money, I am no longer a taxpayer. The fact that I worked for 40 odd years means nothing to the government," said Forest Hills Resident Bonnie Pokorny.
"This center is my day to day life," said Forest Hills Resident Lola Turner.
Advocates say the closures would be devastating to seniors, many of whom live in poverty.
Unless funding is restored, the 105 senior centers are expected to close by the end of June.
