The man who led transit workers on their last strike in 2005 has moved from the executive suite back to the subway tracks.
Former Transport Workers Union Local 100 President Roger Toussaint has resigned from his vice president's job with the Transport Workers Union International and filed paperwork with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to return as a track worker.
The move is prompting speculation that Toussaint may try to run again for president of Local 100, which he led from 2001 to 2009.
The New York Daily News reports Toussaint recently sent an email to Local 100 officials criticizing current TWU President John Samuelsen, who is negotiating a new contract with the MTA.
A union source tells the Daily News Toussaint might just be trying to get paid for unused vacation or sick time before he retires.
The president of the TWU International tells the Daily News that Toussaint's time as an executive was only meant to be temporary.
