El Museo del Barrio reopened to the public this weekend more than a year and a half after closing for renovations.

As part of its reopening, the East Harlem museum unveiled a new gallery.

It's the first space dedicated to the museum's permanent collection.
There's also a new theater and cafe.

"It's a celebration of New York. It's a celebration of all that Latinos have brought to this city in terms of their arts, their spirit, their tradition," said El Museo del Barrio Executive Director Julian Zugazagoitia.

"Today is a great day for New York City, a great day for the Latino, Latina community. But really a day that celebrates the diversity of New York City and celebrates the fact that New York, we know that our greatest strength is our diversity," said City Council Speaker Christine Quinn.
