As World Diabetes Day is being celebrated today, a new report shows the disease is on the rise in the city.
According to a report by the Department of Health, more than 9 percent of New Yorkers have been diagnosed with diabetes. It is a 13 percent increase since 2002.
The city rate also exceeds the current national rate of 7.5 percent.
An estimated 200,000 New Yorkers may have the disease and do not know it.
The report shows New York men are more likely than women to have diabetes and the disease is more common among those with lower levels of education.
To help curb the problem, health officials are pushing such initiatives as the posting of calorie counts in chain restaurants, keeping a citywide registry of blood sugar readings for physicians' use and expanding access to fresh fruits and vegetables in underserved neighborhoods.
