Everything old is new again at the 84th Academy Awards, as a silent movie and a fantasy set in the 1930s lead the pack of nominees.

The nominations were announced this morning in Beverly Hills.

Martin Scorsese's 3-D fantasy "Hugo" scored 11 nominations including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Director.

The black-and-white silent movie "The Artist" is close behind with 10 nods, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Jean Dujardin, Best Supporting Actress for Berenice Bejo, Best Directing and Best Original Screenplay.

The real-life baseball drama "Moneyball" checked in with six nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Brad Pitt, Best Supporting Actor for Jonah Hill and Best Adapted Screenplay.

"The Descendants," a drama about a man suddenly faced with raising his two daughters alone, picked up five nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for George Clooney, and Alexander Payne received Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay nominations.

Meryl Streep received a record breaking 17th Oscar nomination for her portrayal of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady."

Woody Allen's time-traveling comedy "Midnight In Paris" picked up a nomination for Best Picture, while Woody himself got two, one for Best Director and one for Best Original Screenplay.

"The Help," set during the civil rights movement in the South, is also up for Best Picture. Viola Davis got a Best Actress nod, while Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer compete for Oscar gold in the same category, Best Supporting Actress.

The other Best Picture contenders include the September 11th drama "Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close," director Terrence Malick's "The Tree Of Life" and Steven Spielberg's "War Horse," which received six nominations.

Glenn Close also got a Best Actress nomination for her gender-switching role in "Albert Nobbs." Joining her in that category are Rooney Mara for "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" and Michelle Williams who portrayed Marilyn Monroe in "My Week With Marilyn."

Rounding out the Best actor category are Demian Bichir in "A Better Life" and Gary Oldman for "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy."

The odds on favorite to win in the Best Supporting Actor category is veteran actor Christopher Plummer for his turn in "Beginners." Also nominated in this category are Kenneth Branagh in "My Week With Marilyn," Nick Nolte in "Warrior" and Max Von Sydow in "Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close."

Rounding out the Best Supporting Actress category are Janet McTeer for "Albert Nobbs" and Melissa McCarthy for her hilarious performance in "Bridesmaids."

The Academy Awards will be handed out on Sunday, February 26.
