Cromer began his career on Broadway performing alongside Ethel Merman and later with other famous names like Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, and Billie Holiday.

Jared Grimes, one of Cromer's proteges, said the late dancer was an inspiration.

"Harold 'Stumpy' Cromer, I would say, was an ambassador of tap dancers and tap dance altogether. He was our link to the past and to a lot of the great tap dancers that came before us," Grimes said. "He would often tell us stories and kind of connect us with what it meant to be a tap dancer decades ago."

Cromer was born and raised in Hell's Kitchen and continued to live in that neighborhood until his death on Saturday.
