A fitness program that gets you ready to compete with others around the world has many New Yorkers amped up and ready to go. NY1's Kafi Drexel filed the following report. The CrossFit workout program, also known as boxes, has become so popular that it has its own version of the Olympics, where competitors compete from around the world to be deemed the fittest person on the planet.
"I believe the first box to start here was Crossfit NYC that's in Manhattan and then you had another box which started here in Brooklyn and now you have Crossfit South Brooklyn, you have Crossfit Virtuosity, you have Crossfit 7-1-8, you have Crossfit Marine Park," said Darren Taylor of CrossFit DUMBO.
Often the regimen comes with a workout of the day, or "WOD."
Started more than a decade ago by a California gymnast, CrossFit's training regimen is so intense it has been adopted by police and fire departments and even military outfits around the world.
The workout demands a range of physical challenges from running and climbing rope to lifting and pulling weights.
Participants say the workout makes them ready for almost any fitness challenge.
"I actually had two surgeries," explained participant Montel Cherry. "One I had on my uterus and I bounced back like "that" and it really I think had to do with CrossFit. Five months ago I had a c-section and had a baby - and I bounced back and was able to come back here within six weeks."
Others say they are inspired to workout harder thanks to the program.
"I would never really push myself as hard as I get pushed here," said CrossFit participant Reginald Washington. "So that was my main reason for really coming. But now that I've gotten involved with it, it's sort of addictive."
