From New York Fashion Week to Alexander McQueen's Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibit, 2011 had its fair share of eye-popping looks. NY1's Michelle Park filed the following report.The year 2011 was the year of fashion in the headlines, both good and bad. Famed designer Alexander McQueen, who committed suicide in 2010, grabbed headlines again over the summer drawing more than 630,000 fashion enthusiasts to the Metropolitan Museum of Art's "Savage Beauty" exhibit. Some waited as long as five hours to see McQueen's creations.
Designer John Galliano also found himself in the headlines after allegedly making anti Semitic statements. He later apologized but was fired as head designer by Christian Dior. Marc Jacobs has been rumored to be in talks with the the iconic fashion house. Jacobs wasn't just tapped by Dior, he was awarded the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award by the Council of Fashion Designers of American Awards.
And who could forget the wedding of the year as Kate Middleton walked down the aisle with Prince William. Her Alexander McQueen gown, designed by Sarah Burton who took over for the label, was photographed and talked about long after the couple finished up their honeymoon.
Some new names also entered the couture arena in 2011.
Knicks player Amare Stoudemire gave new meaning to the term fashion forward when he teamed up with designer Rachel Roy to churn out a line for Macy's. The two debuted their collection during the third annual Fashion's Night Out, which also signaled the beginning of September fashion week.
This year, the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks fell in middle of the week. Lincoln Center and designers paused to pay tribute to the lives lost. But the show did go on, and designers showcased their bold and beautiful spring/summer collections.
Designer Zang Toi grabbed some attention when he had Kirstie Alley walk the runway, revealing her new figure. And it seemed all the designers were trying to make a statement this September. Designers like Nanette Lepore and Vivienne Tam covered the runway with brightly colored, flowery creations.
