The Giants finally found a sanctuary Wednesday: away from the fans, away from the media, back to where they can get down to business. Back on the gridiron.
Speaking to reporters, Giants Head Coach Tom Coughlin said his players were "getting back to work" Wednesday as practices began again at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, ahead of Sunday's Super Bowl match-up against New England.
Earlier in the day, players and coaches spoke with members of the media and outlined their plan of attack.
"We're excited about getting back to work, about applying ourselves to the very difficult task at hand and bring forward the work that we've put in the last week back in New Jersey and continuing to build and refine the preparation that we had there," said Giants Head Coach Tom Coughlin.
"Now that we're getting back into practice, getting back into meetings. Just try to keep everything as consistent as possible with what you've been doing for the last 20 weeks," said Giants Quarterback Eli Manning.
"We are excited about getting on the football field, it's been a couple of days now. I think the guys are starting to chomp at the bit. We're ready to get back preparing to win the game on Sunday," said Giants defensive end Justin Tuck.
Nevertheless, some team members said they were glad to have had a couple days off from practice.
"We've been playing, aw man, for 24, 26 weeks, including the pre-season. You can't have a run like this without having some knicks and bruises," said Giants safety Kenney Phillips. "We did practice a few days last week and everyone, it went extremely well. But the guys just need a little bit of rest time."
It’s been nonstop, high intensity football for the Giants dating back to the Jets game when they were 7-7. From that point on, it’s been playoff football for Big Blue.
"Starting with the Jets game, then Dallas and the playoff games, we haven't had a break and guys start to break down a little bit. So we needed this break,” said Giants safety Deon Grant.
Giants defensive lineman Osi Umenyiora did not show up at the morning media event and was fined $20,000. Team management did not explain his absence.
Sunday's kick-off time at Lucas Oil Stadium is set for 6:30 p.m.
