Police say a 14-year-old boy is dead and another is lucky to be alive after they went swimming this afternoon in Far Rockaway, Queens.

Police say 14-year-old Akeem Craig was swimming off Beach 19th and Seagirt Boulevard with a friend in Far Rockaway Tuesday afternoon when he went under the water.

Emergency workers say Craig was unconscious when he was pulled out about 40 minutes later. There were apparently no lifeguards in the area.

He was transported to St. John’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

His 14-year-old friend was rescued by a civilian who was nearby.

"I was fishing at the particular time and I told the individuals, 'You're in the way. You've got to swam where the lifeguards are at, that's where the red flags are.' They didn't pay me no mind," said eyewitness Reginald Whitley.

"It's a sad thing with something like that and to see the bodies coming out the water," said Stanisha Byrd, another eyewitness. "I just pray for the family's strength."

Divers and aviation units were called in to help with the rescue effort.
