Tenants in a Bronx high-rise are banding together to file a lawsuit against their landlord over broken elevators and unsafe conditions.

Residents of 1380 University Avenue say the 17-story building is a nest of unsafe conditions, including mold, broken windows, doors and locks, inadequate heat, and leaking ceilings, pipes, and toilets.

A total of 47 tenants have joined in the suit, filed last week in Bronx Housing Court. They say what's especially maddening are the elevators, which regularly malfunction.

"Two weeks ago, my 13-year-old son, going down the stairs because of no elevator in the morning, going to school. He slipped on urine. No pole to grab on. He sprained his ankle," said one building resident.

"One day I had to go and pick up my medication. And when I stand out there for about half an hour, I see some people panting, coming up the stairs. They said, 'Miss, the elevator ain't working.' I had to go back inside. I couldn't reach my children to get my medication," said another building resident.

Attempts to contact the landlord for comment were unsuccessful.
