Police are questioning two people in connection with a Bronx shooting that killed a man and left a teenage girl in critical condition Monday, but have made no arrests.
Vada Vasquez, 15, is in critical condition at Lincoln Hospital after being shot in the head by a stray bullet.
Vasquez was walking home from Bronx Latin School yesterday, and had reached the corner of Home Street and Prospect Avenue in Morrisania, when an argument broke out in a group nearby and shots were fired.
Sources say Tyrone Creighton, 19, was the intended target. He was shot in the abdomen and leg and was taken to Lincoln Hospital.
Local residents say violence in the area has become all too common.
"This poor little girl, it could have been my son; he's 13,” said a local. “I just don't want to stay here."
"It's kind of scary to walk around this area, because I never heard of anything like that happening," said local student Mabel Ferrer. "So now it makes you kind of feel eerie just to go to school."
"Random acts of violence have been going on like this for years, but it's just so sad that it has to happen to someone that's trying to do something in her life," said parent Chanda Reed. "And you have to get caught in the crossfire for this type of attention to be brought to it."
As police search for the responsible shooters, counselors were on hand at Bronx Latin School, where staff members prepared for parent-teacher conferences.
"I think it's going to be hard because today is our parent-teacher conference, and how many parents are going to trust the neighborhood, sending their child to school today," said Marilyn Cattouse, a parent coordinator. "So, we're just hoping for the best and hope the parents will understand that we are living in a community that you just have to be careful."
"It's just sad that it's a good kid, and just a random act of violence," said Bronx Latin teacher Bobby Macheel. "I mean, it could have been me, it could have been any student that I teach, so, it's horrible."
Police are also investigating a triple shooting in East Tremont.
According to police, officers last night found three people shot in the courtyard of a building on Prospect Avenue.
Felix Delvalle, 19, was pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital.
A 42-year-old man was also taken to St. Barnabas in critical condition, and a 58-year-old woman was taken to Lincoln Hospital with a leg wound.
So far, there have been no arrests.
