A dozen people were injured Monday after a fire ripped through a Bronxdale apartment building.

The New York City Fire Department says the flames broke out on the fourth floor of 785 Pelham Parkway just after 2 p.m.

Fire officials say when they arrived, people were hanging out of the building's windows to escape the flames.

Officials say they think the fire may have started in a closet, and that flames blocked the hallway, trapping the victims.

The fire injured five children and four adults – one of whom is said to be in serious condition after jumping from a fourth-floor window.

"There was a young lady hanging out the window, and she was dangling her baby out the window, everything was on fire and she needed someone to come get her baby. And there was a man from this building who was helping, and then the fire department came," said one witness.

"A person jumped out the window prior to our arrival. Plus there were other people bloodied up, I guess from the glass on the windows, because there was blood on the ladder," said FDNY Deputy Chief Joe Saccente.

The FDNY says three firefighters suffered minor injuries while fighting the flames, which took about an hour to bring under control.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
