Police in the Bronx are investigating after a man yesterday fell to his death down an elevator shaft.
Authorities say a 34-year-old man and his wife were in the process of moving into the building at 1749 Grand Concourse in the Mount Hope Section when the incident occurred.
Police say the two were carrying a mattress into the building’s freight elevator just before 11 p.m., and when the doors opened the elevator was not there. But the man backed into the elevator without looking, and fell about three stories.
He was taken to Saint Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Residents say the incident has them worried.
"This is very concerning to me because of the fact I do live on a lower level and I have to use these elevators," said one building resident. "And I'm handicapped with a cane, and it's very inconvenient. My building, I like it, but they have to do improvements. And if it's causing people's deaths, this is something that has to be done."
There is still an open complaint from last month to the Department of Buildings regarding one of the building's main elevators. Another complaint from January was closed out with no violation issued.
Police have not yet released the victim's identity.
