Cyclist Dies After Colliding With City Bus In The Bronx

A 57-year-old cyclist has died after colliding with a city bus Wednesday morning in the Bronx.

According to the New York City Police Department, the woman was traveling southbound on Crotona Avenue near East Tremont Avenue at around 8:30 a.m. when the occupant of a parked vehicle opened the door, striking the woman.

The cyclist then swerved into a traffic lane and was hit by a city bus.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The occupant of the vehicle was issued a summons.

Residents say heavy traffic in the area makes it a dangerous place for bikers.

"There are bikers every morning constantly, everybody does their job. They got to do either messenger or just take the deliveries,” said one local resident. “And here in Crotona, it's the worst cause they don't have no bike lanes, and people need bike lanes here on Crotona."

"They got [bike lanes] in Manhattan, why can't we have them in the Bronx, especially here in Tremont or Crotona,” said another. “There are a lot of kids here that ride bikes. We need those bike lanes here."

The Department of Transportation says it is planning to install bicycle lanes in Crotona Park this year and is looking to extend the lanes north onto local streets, including along Crotona Avenue and East Tremont Avenue. However, the agency says there have been no fatalities of any kind the intersection in at least the last five years.
