A Bronx conference offered New Yorkers on a warm Saturday opportunities to learn new and improved ways to help spring gardens bloom.

The city's Parks Department hosted the 26th annual GreenThumb Grow Together gardening conference at Hostos Community College in Concourse Village, Bronx.

The event offered workshops on advanced gardening techniques and cultivating involvement from the community and youth activities.

Organizers said community gardens revitalize neighborhoods across the five boroughs.

"It's a way of giving back to the community, something positive, something productive," said President Michael Young of Padre Pizza.

"We get to play in the dirt," said volunteer Jada Young.

GreenThumb, the nation's largest urban gardening program, assists over 600 gardens and nearly 20,000 gardeners in the city.
