The collapse of an old sewer main interrupted evening traffic Thursday in Bedford Park, Bronx.

Webster Avenue was closed between Fordham Road to Bedford Park Boulevard and the BX41 and BX55 bus lines were being redirected around the large sinkhole, seen above, which eroded around 11:30 a.m.

As of Friday morning, Webster remains closed at 198th Street and the BX41 and BX55 routes are being diverted to Southern Boulevard.

Crews from the New York City Fire Department, Consolidated Edison and the city Department of Environmental Protection are trying to protect nearby gas, water and electrical lines and fix the damage.

"We have a 25-feet by 25-feet by 20-feet hole," said FDNY Battalion Chief Tom Reilly. "Initially it was a gas line, Con Ed plugged up the gas line."

"We're going to isolate all the utilities -- water, sewer, electric and gas -- in the intersection. Right now we have about 200 people who are currently out of water. We're working on getting that restarted, hopefully by sometime this evening we'll have that back on," said DEP Deputy Commissioner Jim Roberts.

The nearby Part Of The Solution soup kitchen on Webster Avenue canceled the evening's serving of more than 100 dinners to the needy, to prevent the risk of exposure to water and gas leaks.

"We have actually told clients to not come back, just in case," said Michelle Eaton of the POTS Kitchen. "We'd rather be prepared than not prepared. Some parts of the water have already been shut off in the building, and so we're definitely just trying to be patient."

Con Ed officials say gas was temporarily stopped to four buildings after a 1.25-inch gas service line was damaged from the sewer collapse, but that service has been completely restored.
