An expensive hobby brings a group of racing enthusiasts to a Bronx park every weekend. NY1's Dean Meminger filed the following report.

On any given weekend, scores of men with controls in their hands take over a part of Bronx River Park to race their remote control cars.

"Oh yeah, the competition is real hard, real hard,” said one competitor.

"I'm going to beat him around the track,” said another. “It is about driving and handling with speed. I'm going to beat him.”

"If somebody is faster than you this weekend, next weekend you come out with something better,” added a third.

The high-tech cars carry a high price tag.

"You can get a ready-run kit for anywhere from $500 to $700,” said one racer. “But most of us have what's called a ‘hopped-up kit.’ You will spend well over a thousand dollars."

The racers put a lot of time into their cars and maintaining the track.

"It is a public track. It is free and it makes it easy for us to come out and test our vehicles,” said a hobbyist.

"You think about it all week,” said another. “You think about the forecast, the extended forecast. What's going to happen Saturday and Sunday? Oh, it’s going to rain Friday, so we might have to do a little work on the track."

"The thing is, right now this is a decent track to run on, but it needs some enhancement to get it to perfection," said a third.

The Parks Department says it currently does not have money in its budget to make repairs to the course. However, if the city gives the green light, racers say they'll front the money for the renovation.
