The annual New York Emperors Stickball Tournament is officially underway in the Bronx.

More than a dozen teams from all across the city and as far away as California and Puerto Rico are competing on Stickball Boulevard in Soundview for the ultimate bragging rights.

The 26th annual stickball competition is a city tradition that dates back to the 1940s.

While there's a lot of trash-talking, players say it's all about having fun and spending time with family.

"We have fun on the block all day, we'd be occupied, nobody got into any trouble and after we'd play all day we'd just go home and go to sleep and pick it up the next day," said stickball player "Downtown" Arnie Brown.

"I know a couple of guys that are 22, 25 that I met when they were six out here so it's more family oriented and it's a brotherhood," said New York Emperors Stickball League President Richard Marrero.

Anyone can play stickball with little money and equipment. All it takes is a broom stick and a bouncy ball.

Sunday marked the second day of competition. On Monday, the top eight teams will face off for the title.
