An upstate man received a new lease on life after undergoing a rare double transplant surgery at a Bronx hospital.
Juan Farias, 32, of Middletown, N.Y. recently left Montefiore Medical Center after a successful heart-liver double transplant.
The surgery was performed just a week ago.
Farias was born with a rare genetic enzyme deficiency in his liver that made a heart condition worse, causing heart failure.
Doctors determined a double transplant would have to be done, because Farias's liver disorder would destroy a new heart if untreated.
Only 11 heart-liver transplants were performed in the country last year.
