Skaters have a new place to show their skills in the Bronx, as city officials opened today a $6 million skatepark across from Yankee Stadium in the South Bronx.

The park features half-pipes, ramps, stairs, rails, ledges and banks, and next door is a traditional playground with slides, climbing bars and water sprinklers.

The project is the latest in the series of new parks built to replace open space lost by the building of the new Yankee Stadium.

"We promised the community we'd build world class parks and playgrounds here around Yankee Stadium. We've kept that promise," said City Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe. "We have more parkland than we had originally. We're going to be planting 8,000 new trees, and you can see many new trees around this park. It's just a happy day when you can say we've spent $200 million dollars building new, state-of-the-art parks in the Bronx."

The area also includes benches and some lawn areas.

Designers say they used traditional materials to reflect the community's past and future.
