A rally is held at Bronx Community College to try to prevent a student from being deported.

Julio Hernandez Moreno, a 24-year-old radiology student, says he is seeking asylum because he fears for his life if he goes back to El Salvador.

Hernandez says he fled to the United States in 2007 as an undocumented immigrant after gang members threatened him because he is gay.

"I came to the United States like a lot of people try to come to the United States to get a better life for family. But I never think I'd be in this situation," said Hernandez.

"Julio should be granted the right to remain in the United States, go to college, as he's doing now, and be a productive citizen of our great country," said Manhattan Councilman Robert Jackson.

A hearing on Hernandez's case will be held on August 8.
