A new, healthy supermarket opened Thursday as part of a program aimed at providing nutritious food to low-income neighborhoods.
Former Mets star Daryl Strawberry and local officials were there to welcome the new Western Beef supermarket in Tremont.
It's the first store to open as part of the city's FRESH program, which provides companies with financial and zoning incentives to open supermarkets with fresh, affordable food in underserved communities.
"Obesity and childhood diabetes is on the rise. And how do you combat that? You don't combat it with another McDonalds, another Kentucky Fried Chicken. You combat it with fresh fruits and vegetables and produce," said Bronx City Councilman Joel Rivera.
"When you have the opportunity to have a day like this, and this store and this chain opening here, and you have an opportunity to give back to the community that's affordable to the community, that's awesome," said Strawberry.
The city hopes to continue expanding the program.
