In the Morrisania section of the Bronx, residents marked Martin Luther King Day with community service.
The nonprofit group WHEDco, along with the New York City Coalition Against Hunger and the Southern Boulevard Merchant Association, joined together for a "serve-a-thon" on Monday.
About 40 volunteers helped clean up trash along Southern Boulevard and painted a mural on Intervale Avenue in Morrisania.
"It creates a sense of community. I think everybody is interested in creating a pride of place," said WHEDco Director of Housing Development Rebecca Eigenbauer. "Residents and community members are, you know, looking forward to helping to clean up the area in which they live and shop."
The event is part of a series of projects to encourage economic development and opportunities.
