Five newly hatched Chinese yellow-headed box turtles are among the Bronx Zoo's newest residents.
They are being raised as part of the Wildlife Conservation Society's effort to save endangered turtle species.
Zoo officials say there are believed to be fewer than 150 of that species of turtle left in the wild due to human consumption, use in traditional medicine and being sold as pets, and pollution and habitat loss.
The breeding of these turtles is part of a larger plan to prevent the extinction of some of the most at risk species of turtles and tortoises.
The young turtles are currently on display in the reptile house.
